July Newsletter 2023

Dear Members, families and friends

Welcome to our July Newsletter.
We hope that you are keeping warm in this freezing weather. Winter has certainly hit us with a vengeance. Please snuggle up with your loved ones whilst the temperatures are so low. Plenty of hot drinks and warm clothes.

Welcome to all our new members. We hope that you will benefit from being part of this group as you all travel this dementia journey.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the Campbell and Chipumha families on the passing of your loved ones. Such a difficult very difficult time for you all. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Please remember to pay your subs for 2023 ! Thank you to all who have paid to date. We appreciate your continued support.

September is World Alzheimer’s month and as in previous years we will be having various functions. Planning is still in progress but the Memory Walk will be held on 21st September 2023 at the Borrowdale Race Course. We are also planning on having a Walk in Highfields if we get the necessary permissions. Other functions will be arranged during the month. We hope to get media coverage during the month and we hope that you will support our functions to get as much visibility and awareness as possible to make life better for you and your loved ones. We will be looking for prizes for our raffle so if you have anything that you may like to contribute please contact us at the office.

Congratulations to Island Hospice for hosting an excellent Men’s Health Fare in June. Thank you for inviting Zarda to have an information stand. We appreciate the opportunity to share information with people from different age groups. There was a lot of interest.
This past week Zarda were given slots of Star FM and Classic 268. Both sessions were received well and many questions came in from members of the public.

We will be having a fundraiser Golf Day in October. We hope that all you golfers will put in an appearance. We need teams of four so save October 21st to come and join us for this fun day. Tell friends and family. We are also looking for sponsors. Please contact the office for more information.

A reminder that Carer support meetings are held on first Wednesday of the month at Highlands Presbyterian Church. These are very informal meetings and a chance to share with others who are travelling the journey through dementia like you. Please consider joining us.
There will be a training course on 27th July. There will be no training in August. The cost of the course is $40. This training covers all aspects of dementia and related issues. All participants are given a certificate of attendance and a comprehensive set of notes to take home. Please book through the office or call 0779 714 905. Details below.

We still have quite a number of pampers (various sizes), pads and linen savers at the office. There are no pull-ups. We also have a couple of walkers and other aides for the bath and toilet.

BREAKING NEWS
There has been good news this past few days about new treatments for Alzheimer’s. There are two new drugs that have been under review in both America and UK. These drugs have been trialed on early stage dementia and show an improvement of cognitive capacity of approximately 35%. There are of course side affects for some. There is also a huge cost implication. The good news is that the researchers and pharma companies seem to be on the right track to finding a cure that will ease the burden of dementia in the coming years.
Work is also ongoing to develop a vaccine for dementia.
